How to clean your Moroccan Rugs and Floor Cushions

Moroccan rugs and floor cushions are known for their intricate designs and vibrant colours, making them a popular choice for home decor. However, just like any other type of rug or cushion, they can accumulate dirt and stains over time. Here's a guide on how to clean Moroccan rugs and floor cushions to keep them looking beautiful for years to come.

1. Vacuum regularly: The first step in cleaning a Moroccan rug or Floor Cushion is to vacuum it regularly to remove loose dirt and dust. Use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar or rotating brush to loosen dirt and debris from the fibres of the rug. Be sure to vacuum both sides of the rug/cushion to remove as much dirt as possible.

2. Spot cleaning: If you notice a stain on your Moroccan rug or floor cushion, it's important to act quickly. Blot the stain with a clean cloth to remove as much of the liquid as possible. Later when the piece is dry you can vacuum it.
For a more stubborn stain or if the first method does not remove it, use a mixture of water, vinegar and baking soda to clean the stain. Be sure to test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the rug first to ensure that it doesn't cause any damage.

3. Deep cleaning: If your Moroccan rug or cushion is in need of a deeper clean, consider taking it to a professional cleaner who specialises in hand-woven rugs. They will have the tools and expertise to clean the rug without causing any damage.

Alternatively you can try a deep clean yourself with the following method:

  • - Take the rug or cushion outside and beat it to remove any excess dirt and lay it down flat to vacuum it. Use the highest setting on your vacuum to remove as much dirt as possible. For rugs, vacuum along the short width as opposed to length ways, and work slowly back and forth. Use a hand attachment to concentrate on any dirtiest sections.

  • - Use a tall ladder or fence so the rug can be hung vertically for water to drain off with minimal effort as rugs are very heavy when wet. Lay your rug /cushion over and spray it thoroughly with a garden hose. If you have a gurney or pressure washer this is recommended but be sure it is not on a too high setting to cause damage. Start at the top and ensure the rug is completely soaked. Repeat on both sides watching all the water run off from dirty to clean.

  • - Use a soft bristled scrubbing brush to clean any dark spots on both sides of the rug. Continue spraying with your hose/gurney/pressure washer.

  • - If dirty spots or stains still remain, you can use the vinegar and baking soda spot treatment method as above, but be sure to patch test it on an inconspicuous section first.

4. Drying: After cleaning, leave the rug or floor cushion draped over a tall ladder or fence for an hour to allow as much water to drip off as possible. Then try to squeeze it out if you can. Then lie the rug flat if you have a clean area and roll it as tightly as possible to squeeze even more water out. Once this is done, hang it back in direct sunlight to dry for up to 12-24 hours depending on how warm the weather is. Wool has a very distinct smell when wet so you should be able to smell when it has dried as well as feel. Allow the rug to dry completely before placing it back in the room.

5. Maintenance: To keep your Moroccan rug or cushion looking its best, make sure to regularly vacuum and spot clean as needed. Avoid placing heavy furniture on top of the rug, as this can cause indentations or damage to the fibres.

In addition to regular cleaning, consider investing in a rug pad to protect your Moroccan style rug from wear and tear, as well as to prevent slipping on hardwood or tile floors.

Cleaning and maintaining your Moroccan rug or floor cushion is important to preserve its beauty and prolong its lifespan. By following these tips, you can enjoy your stunning Moroccan decor for years to come.
