When it comes to adding flair to your space, there are few things as effective as a Moroccan rug. These rugs have been around for centuries and have been used throughout the world since the middle ages. They are known for their interesting designs and vibrant colors.

Moroccan rugs are a timeless addition to any space. Whether you're looking to add an exotic touch to your living room or want to create a cozy area in your bedroom, these rugs are sure to add flair and character to any space.

Moroccan Rug: A History

Moroccan rugs are known for their beautiful, intricate patterns and bold colors. They're also known for being exceptionally high-quality—and that's no accident.

In Morocco, the craft of rug-making is a time-honored tradition that dates back to the 13th century. Moroccan weavers take pride in their work, and today they are considered some of the best in the world.

In ancient times, nomads would use these rugs as blankets on cold nights. They were also used as flooring in tents or homes. The nomadic tribesmen would use the wool from their sheep to create the rugs. Moroccan rugs might have a deep pile suitable for the snowy Atlas Mountains or a thin, airy weave suitable for the scorching Sahara.

The beauty of Moroccan rugs lies in their rich history and the intricate designs that have been passed on from generation to generation. The design varies from region to region and family to family, but all are inspired by the culture and traditions of Morocco.

Different Styles of Moroccan Rugs

Moroccan rugs have a more casual air than the classic Oriental carpets commonly used in Western interior design, yet they pair beautifully with contemporary furnishings. As a result of their adaptability as a decorating element and their relatively low pricing compared to those of other antique rug types, vintage Moroccan rugs are becoming increasingly popular.

Over time, Moroccan style rug weaving became an art form. Today there are many different types of Moroccan rugs available from different regions in Morocco where these pieces are still handmade using traditional techniques. These rugs can be complimented very well by a pouffe or a pair of cactus silk cushions

Beni Ourain Rugs

Beni Ourain carpets are made by 17 separate Berber tribes who also go by the name Beni Ourain. Such carpets may be found in the Middle Atlas Mountains. These carpets are made from wool collected from a local sheep breed in the Beni Ourain area. In addition to the traditional straight or zigzag geometric patterns, these carpets often have black and white diamond-shaped patterns. The carpet's foundation is a neutral colour, typically off-white or cream. For example, like other Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain has abstract geometric designs, Talisman symbols, and motifs from the Berber culture. These carpets are quite comfortable to the touch due to the use of wool in their creation.

Boujad Rugs

The Boujad is a popular style of Moroccan rug that can be found throughout Morocco. Boujad rugs come in many different colors and patterns, but they all share the same basic design elements including diamonds and squares that make up their borders. These rugs look great when paired with other accessories from Morocco such as pillows, throw blankets, or even Ottoman pouffe for a pop of color in any room.

Boucherouite Rugs

The Boucherouite rug is one of the most popular styles of Moroccan rugs because of its beautiful design and vibrant colors. In contrast to other rug styles, this most popular variety of Moroccan rugs is not made of wool. The Moroccan rag rug is a traditional handmade item that is constructed from knotted scraps of cloth. These rugs might be difficult to move around the house due to the amount of fabric used, but they can usually be washed without worrying about the wool becoming ruined or the dye running.

Beni Mguild Rugs

The western Middle Atlas Mountains are where Beni Mguild carpets are woven. Rugs in this area have a thick, deep pile of wool because of the cold, snowy winters. In the summer, when the sun's rays are strong enough to heat a home without the need for additional heating, Amazighs often turn them over and utilise the flat side.

Bright colours of Beni Mguild Moroccan Rugs emerge from the loom's vertical knots. Their colour scheme is exquisite, with many shades of red, purple, brown, and blue. These works of art are guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a glow on your walls.

Kilim Rugs

A kilim rug is one of the most popular styles of Moroccan rugs because they come in so many colors and designs. Kilim rugs are traditionally hand-woven and have a flat weave that gives them a very rustic look. They also have an earthy and organic feel to them that makes them perfect for any room in the house!

Kilim carpets are also known for their durability because they are made from durable materials such as wool, silk, or cotton jute that do not wear down easily over time. The light pile makes them ideal for warmer months. As a bonus, they look great when hung on the wall as a tapestry.

Azilal Rugs

If you're looking for something more modern but still want to keep with your Moroccan theme then an Azilal rug may be what you're looking for!

Intricate designs, vivid colours, and symbolic motifs all contribute to the unique narratives conveyed by Azilal rugs. These coveted works of art are a product of the Atlas Mountains, where they are hand-knotted using wool. The majority of an Azilal rug's foundation is made up of the natural cream or white colour of the wool used, which is then woven with brilliantly stained wool in colours inspired by local flora.
